Healthy Menu Options at Fast Food Joints

The question that seems to be on many people’s minds is just how healthy are “healthy options” at fast food restaurants? The answer is not a simple one. This largely depends on which chain you are visiting, and what options you are looking at. Here are a few things that you should consider when looking at the healthy choices menus.

What is in it?

This is the biggest part of figuring out just how healthy that chicken Caesar salad is. Take a look at the different ingredients in what you are considering, and also take a look at what the nutritional value of those ingredients is. Most restaurants are able to provide you with a little nutrition pamphlet if you ask for one.

Things that are high in fat and sodium are things that you are going to want to try to avoid on the healthy menu. It can be found in things like the salad dressing, or how the chicken is prepared. It is always safer to opt for the un-fried, lightly dressed option, taking some of the guess work out of what you are putting into your body.

Things like dressing and sauce on your burgers and in the salad can add a ton of fat without giving much else. Sure it may help with the flavour, but it can be the difference between tipping the scales in your calorie intake for the day.

Is it fried?

Just because it is fried chicken, doesn’t make it a healthier option. Deep fried equals more fat, something that you are trying to cut back on. Instead of going for that breaded crispy chicken, try the grilled chicken, or just skip it all together. Your body will thank you for it later.

What are the side options?

If you really can’t resist that hamburger, opt for a side salad instead of the fries. It can significantly reduce the amount of fat that is coming from your fast food meal, especially if you go for the low-fat dressing.

What are you drinking?

Many fast food places offer things other than soda to drink. Water is usually readily available if you ask for it. You should also be able to purchase a bottle of water if that makes you more comfortable. Even choosing something like milk over soda is a much better choice, cutting back on the sugar that you are in taking in your meal.

Portion Control

You can get that taste of the fried food you are craving without having to over indulge. Ordering from the kids menu is a great way to get a taste of what you are craving without having to eat more than you need to that is fried.

If you are choosing to eat out at a fast food restaurant, it is important that you are still trying to make healthy choices. This is fairly simple to achieve when you arm yourself with the facts. Don’t let meal deals get in the way of maintaining a happy and healthy lifestyle.
